Scott Degnan wheels his way to Super Mod Triple Crown Champion
The inaugural Triple Crown Series for the Escanaba Motor Speedway Super Mods is in the books with Scott Degnan capturing the championship. The Scott Degnan family of Escanaba pitched a plan to Sands Speedway and Norway Speedway to run the Super Mods at all three tracks. Considering Sands Speedway and Norway Speedway are asphalt and the Super Mods run a dirt track in Escanaba this was an interesting proposal. Both tracks were excited to host this event and it brought together fans from three tracks. The Escanaba Motor Speedway leg of the Triple Crown kicked off at the Allen Yelle Memorial Night on July 26.
Tina Brandel, promoter for Sands Speedway stated, “ Sands Speedway was proud to host the Triple Crown in conjunction with the Allan Yelle Memorial Race on August 3. This race featured the Vintage and Super Modifieds from Escanaba Motor Speedway. This series started in Escanaba and ended in Norway. This year was the first for this event and we hope for it to continue for years to come. Our fans love seeing the Vintage and Super Modifieds on our track”.
Always ready to host a new event, John Ostermann, President of Norway Speedway wrote,
“....the Speedway is welcoming some new stars and some old friends. Starting with the headliners the Escanaba Speedway Super Modified division will be running the 3rd leg of their Triple Crown Series at Norway Speedway. These cars are 600-700 hp open wheeled winged rockets that are predominantly run on dirt but will be at Norway Speedway for the 1st time. The division will be headed up by open wheel stars Scott Degnan, a former asphalt driver at Norway Speedway for many years, Paul Hosking the current point leader, young speedster Drake Degnan, Gunnar Hansen, Jesse Denome, and Coletan Pepin. There are several others including Norway Speedway’s Abi Yelle”.
The definition of a Super Modified at Escanaba Motor Speedway is: “.Cars representing the racing that took place from the beginning to 1980's modified era. This does not include vintage sprint cars or cars that are mostly of sprint car design regardless of year and follow the following rules. All cars need to maintain the vintage spirit and understanding that racing should be for the spirit of fun and showcasing racing of old. This is a competitive class, but not a win at all cost class. Rough driving and cars not following the spirit of being “vintage” will not be acceptable.”
