How frisbees are adding excitement to Escanaba Motor Speedway

ESCANABA — There are some new things going on at Escanaba Motor Speedway this season.
One of those new things involves frisbees.
Yes, frisbees.
Delta Disposal has came on board as a sponsor for the frisbee toss which was brought to the speedway by Crystal Carlson.
“In March of 2022 my husband Clint and I were in Pennsylvania and we stumbled upon the Keystone National Tractor Pulls,” Carlson said. “We bought tickets and before their actual final runs drivers came out and autographed frisbees and threw them into the stands and if you catch one you root on your driver and if he wins you get to go down and get a merchandise pack and I won.”
Carlson had a vision of what that could bring to the Escanaba Motor Speedway.
“It’s a way to get our fans involved with the local drivers,” Carlson said. “If you catch a frisbee and your driver wins you get to go down to victory lane and get your picture taken with the driver. It’s exciting cause people get to know the drivers better and if your new to the track meeting a driver and having a positive experience leads to fans coming out more to support the drivers that they connect with.”
The Delta Disposal frisbee toss will feature a new class on a weekly basis. This weekend, which also happens to be Fan Appreciation night, will be the Island Resort and Casino Sport Compacts.
Carlson hopes that this new twist can help bridge the gap between the racers and the fans.
“There might be a new driver that comes and doesn’t have many fans up there,” Carlson said. “That fan catches their frisbee… you better believe they will be cheer that driver on. Because they want to go down to victory lane, connect and even form a bond with the racer.”
Carlson admits it was kind of a funny story how this became a reality.
“I was at the chamber talking to Matt Valiquette about our race book,” Carlson said. “Todd Kangas came in with a recycle cart and I was eye level with their logo and said ‘Todd, do you make frisbees?’ He said ‘no, but we can.’ We got him a sponsor packet, and now we have Delta Disposal on board and the frisbee toss here.”
Kangas was excited be involved in the long-standing tradition that the Escanaba Motor Speedway brings to the community.
“We are vey excited to be on board with this,” Kangas said. “We enjoy sponsoring the youth and local establishments in our community and the speedway for all it bring to our community.”
So, as you make your way out to the Escanaba Motor Speedway this season look for the blue frisbees flying into the stands as the speedway continues to bring fans closer to the drivers than ever before.
Saturday’s racing starts at 7 p.m. with grandstands opening at 5 p.m.
